ACRD Black vs. Red Bout – July 23

Come out and cheer for your favorite skater on Saturday, July 23 as ACRD hosts its annual Black vs. Red Bout, which will benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign!

In case you missed last year’s inaugural event, you’re in for a special treat. The Black vs. Red Bout pits ACRD team members against one another. Friends become foes, and both teams are playing for bragging rights. The stakes will be higher and the hits will be harder as former teammates try to outsmart and outskate one another. It’s many skaters’ favorite bout, and fans are sure to see an action-packed show of heart and athleticism.

Doors open at 6:30 PM, with the main event starting sharply at 7:00 PM. General admission tickets are $10 for advance sale ($12 at the door). Children ages 5-12 can sit in general admission for $5 (kids under 5 get in free). But for fans 18 and over who want to get real close to the action, can purchase advance front line seats for $20 ($22 at the door). These are the BEST seats in the house and often sell out, so make sure to buy your front line tickets early! Advance tickets can be purchased online at TicketLeap.com or in person at Black Mamba Skatepark in Shoppingtown Mall. One dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign.

After the bout, join us for our official after party at Sharkey’s Eclectic Sports Lounge in Liverpool for drinks, dancing, and a little volleyball. We party as hard as we skate, and after parties at Sharkey’s are always a blast for everyone who attends!

Bout Recap: ACRD Double-Header with CNYRD

Assault City faced a tough lineup in June as the Assault Squad took on the undefeated CNY All Stars and the newly formed Battery Brigade took on the Rome Wreckers. The Assault Squad and CNY All Stars kicked off the night to a roaring crowd. Assault Squad jammers Blaze and Dolly Foxx showed off their speed and agility, but in the end the All-Stars racked up more points than Assault Squad. Final Score: ACRD – 72, CNYRD – 173. MVPs for the first bout went to ACRD’s Malice in Wonderland and CNYRD’s Moody Obsession.

After a hard-rocking halftime show by Born Again Rebels, the Battery Brigade took the track to face off against the Rome Wreckers. The Battery Brigade’s fierce blocking gave ACRD an early lead, but the Wreckers were able to reduce that lead in the second half. But the Battery Brigade was determined to get revenge for the earlier loss. For the last ten minutes of the bout, they kept the Wreckers from scoring any points while they steadily built back up their lead. Final Score: ACRD – 149, CNYRD – 103. MVPs for the second bout went to ACRD’s Poppy Rocks and CNYRD’s Hitgirl.

Make sure to catch ACRD’s next home bout on July 23 when ACRD takes on… ACRD! That’s right, it’s our Black vs. Red bout, where we mix up the Assault Squad and Battery Brigade teams, pit them against each other, and see who comes out on top. Trust us, you don’t want to miss this one.

ACRD Becomes a WFTDA Apprentice League

Assault City Roller Derby is excited to announced that it has been accepted as an apprentice member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
Founded in 2004, WFTDA is the international governing body of women’s flat track roller derby. In addition to maintaining standard rules and regulations, WFTDA distributes quarterly team rankings and sanctions an annual championship tournament.
Assault City Roller Derby will join 57 other roller derby leagues from Belgium, Hawaii, Australia, New York, and points in between.

During ACRD’s apprenticeship, we will work with our partners, the Atlanta Rollergirls, to continue our league’s growth and improvement. During this period, fans should expect to see the same derby action as always as we continue to work behind the scenes to increase our competitiveness and community standing.

Pending the completion of this apprenticeship, WFTDA may choose to grant Assault City full membership. Full WFTDA members are eligible to be included in WFTDA’s team rankings, and may qualify to play at one of the four regional tournaments that lead up to the WFTDA championship each fall.

ACRD & the American Heart Association

The Assault City Roller Derby League is excited to join forces with The American Heart Association again this year in an effort to build healthier lives for those in the Syracuse area and surrounding communities. The team has partnered with the American Heart Association on several occasions, participating in the American Heart Walk/Run at Onondaga Lake Park over the past several years and bouting to benefit the Go Red for Women campaign. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, and the skaters of ACRD are committed to helping the American Heart Association in their efforts to empower women, and others in the community, to take charge of their heart health.
The American Heart Association works every day to educate the public in ways to make our lives healthier. Local programs are geared to teaching the community about small changes every day that can have lifesaving results. Programs range from the online Nutrition Center, which provides heart healthy recipes and a grocery list builder, to support for individuals working to quit smoking. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign holds special significance for the women of ACRD because the “movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease.” To learn more about the Go Red for Women Campaign or to utilize any of the American Heart Association’s free online tools for managing your heart health, visit their website at www.heart.org.
